WILLIAM SMITH'S 1815
GEOLOGICAL MAP
(Second hand copy in 'as new' condition) (folded)
Newly published reproduction of William Smith's famous geological map of 'England and Wales with part of Scotland' - the first geological map ever produced. Published by the British Geological Survey and scanned from an original held in its archives.
Smith’s 1815 map was the subject of Simon Winchester’s book 'The Map that Changed the World'.
Because of the limited size of early 19th century printing presses, this map was never published as a single sheet. It had to be printed in fifteen parts, each folded into six 'panels'. At its original scale of five miles to the inch, the map would have been eight feet long by six feet wide. This reproduction is published at half scale: ten miles to the inch, and is colour-matched to the original.
