Flakes of native gold
Mawddach River, Gwynedd, North Wales
Small flakes of real gold from the famous Mawddach River (Afon Mawddach) near Dolgellau. Each box contains nine flakes of gold. They were panned from the river several decades ago and are from an old collection. Gold panning in the area is now restricted.
The Mawddach River and estuary has been the centre of gold mining for centuries. Gold was mined at several mines, the largest of which were the Gwynfynydd Gold Mine and the Clogau Gold Mine. Welsh gold has traditionally been used to create wedding rings for some members of the Royal family.
Gold occurring naturally is known as 'native' gold. A 'native' element is an element in its pure state and not combined with other elements.
