« backWEARDALE GRANITE
Rare sample from the Rookhope Borehole, Rookhope, Weardale, County Durham
A specimen of coarse-grained granite from the famous Rookhope Borehole, drilled in 1960-1961.
The borehole proved the existence of the Weardale Granite (the North Pennine Batholith) of Devonian age at a depth of 2239 feet (682 metres), unconformably underlying Lower Carboniferous rocks.
This large piece was one of several unlabelled samples which were salvaged when the Rookhope core store was removed in 2006. It is contained in a vintage glass museum display box.
