WATERMELON TOURMALINE

Kamdesh District, Nuristan, Afghanistan

Cut and polished section
of a single crystal

Tourmaline can occur in many different colours. It is a boron silicate but it also contains trace elements and it is these elements that give it its colour, although natural ionizing radiation could also play a part. The vividly-coloured tourmalines are of the variety elbaite, named after the island of Elba in Italy.

Some crystals are pink at one end and green at the other, or green on the outside and pink on the inside when they are known as ‘watermelon’ tourmalines. These are formed when the liquid in which the crystal is growing becomes depleted in certain elements and other elements are substituted as the crystal grows.

Presented in a gemstone display box with a descriptive label.
