CASSITERITE-RICH SAND
Par Sands,
Fowey, Cornwall
A vintage glass phial of fine quartz sand rich in tin ore (cassiterite). From an old collection.
The cassiterite has been concentrated by panning. Par Sands formed from the middle of the 19th century to the middle of the 20th century as a result of the working of the sand in the river valleys upstream to extract the tin, a process known as 'tin streaming'.
