VESICULAR ROPY LAVA (PAHOEHOE)

Lanzarote, Canary Islands

Ropy lava is a type of basalt lava that has an undulating, or ropy, surface. It is also known by the Hawaiian word pahoehoe.

This lovely example is full of cavities which were originally gas bubbles. The ropy surface, which can be seen on the underside, is due to the movement of the runny lava under a congealed surface crust.
