About 20,000 years old

Found on the beach at Clacton-on-Sea, Essex, in 2016

A fine woolly rhinoceros vertebra from gravel dredged from the floor of the North Sea.

The woolly rhinoceros is an extinct species of rhinoceros that was common in Europe and Siberia during the Ice Age. It had thick, long fur, small ears and short legs.

During the coldest periods of the Ice Age the North Sea was dry land and occupied by herds of large mammals.
