VERDE UBATUBA (CHARNOCKITE)

650- 500 million years old (Precambrian age)

Ubatuba, near São Paulo, Brazil

Verde Ubatuba is the trade name of a distinctive type of coarse-grained granite, often encountered on our high streets. It was intruded deep in the Earth's crust in late Precambrian times and is known by geologists as a charnockite.

Charnockites are enigmatic rocks - consisting of an unusual mixture of minerals, mainly quartz, feldspar, and pyroxene. Their origin is still not fully understood and they appear to have both metamorphic and igneous histories. This particular variety is a handsome decorative stone with brownish-green feldspar crystals.

This sample is polished on one side. It is presented in a lidded gift box.
