Ulexite is a mineral with long, fibrous crystals that act as optical fibres, transmitting light by internal reflection. When a piece of ulexite is polished it projects an image on the opposite surface of the mineral. This property has led to it being given the name ‘TV rock’.
Ulexite contains boron which has many practical uses in industry. It is mined at the Borax mine near the town of Boron, California. It is an evaporite mineral along with gypsum and halite and has been formed by the evaporation of large bodies of water in prehistoric times.
