'TURRITELLA AGATE'

Polished slice of the so-called 'Turritella agate' which is a popular gemstone

50 million years old

Wyoming, U.S.A.

The attractive ‘Turritella agate’ from the Green River Formation in Wyoming consists of tightly-coiled snail shells (gastropods) preserved in chalcedony, a variety of quartz.

However, despite its name these shells are not Turritella, which is a marine gastropod, but the gastropod Elimia tenera, which is a freshwater species.

Provided with a label as shown.
