'TURRITELLA AGATE'

Small unpolished slice

50 million years old

Wyoming, U.S.A.

The ‘Turritella agate’ from the Green River Formation in Wyoming consists of tightly-coiled snail shells (gastropods) preserved in chalcedony, a variety of quartz.  It is a popular gemstone.

However, despite its name these shells are not Turritella, which is a marine gastropod, but the gastropod Elimia tenera, which is a freshwater species.

Presented in a lidded gift box.
