It is from Ordovician rocks exposed in a quarry at Gilwern Hill, near Builth Wells in mid Wales.
Trilobites, an extinct class of marine animals, are the oldest of all the familiar fossils. They flourished in the seas during the Ordovician period, an early division of geological time.
