SELENITE CRYSTALS
Isle of Sheppey, Kent
Selenite is a transparent variety of gypsum, named after the Greek for 'stone of the moon'.
These specimens were collected from the London Clay in the cliffs on the north coast of the Isle of Sheppey in the 1980s and are from an old collection. They are lustrous, complete or partially complete crystal groups.
Selenite crystals naturally grow in clay as a result of a chemical reaction between the calcium of fossil shells and the sulphur from iron pyrite (fools gold).
