TRACK OF A TRILOBITE

450 million years old (Ordovician Period)

Hamar L'Aghdad, Morocco

This specimen shows a track that has been attributed to a trilobite as it walked across a muddy sea floor 450 million years ago. It is a snapshot in time from the Ordovician period, when the oceans were dominated by trilobites, brachiopods and graptolites, and life was yet to appear on land.

The tracks have been infilled with fine silt which has now been turned to rock, preserving the tracks as a 'positive' impression. There are two parallel tracks corresponding to the trilobite's legs.

It is a good example of a trace fossil. Trace fossils are evidence preserved in rocks of biological activity and are of great scientific importance, providing information on the lifestyles of prehistoric creatures.

The photographs are taken using oblique lighting to make the track easier to see.
