THE ORIGIN OF SPECIES

By Charles Darwin

Paperback
(second hand copy in 'as new' condition)

Charles Darwin was one of the most influential scientists of modern times. It was from his study at Down House in Kent that he worked on the scientific theories that first scandalized and then revolutionized the Victorian world, culminating in the publication of his book 'On the Origin of Species by means of Natural Selection' in 1859, now usually abbreviated to simply 'The Origin of Species'.

Although Darwin is nowadays regarded as a biologist, for the first 20 years of his scientific career he considered himself primarily a geologist. Darwin’s early work in geology provided the foundations for his later research into evolution.

This edition has an introduction examining the background to Darwin's work, and the intellectual forces which helped, or in some cases hindered, its development. There is also a glossary of the principal scientific terms used in the book.

Published by Penguin in 1985.
