THE MINES OF MENDIP

By J.W. Gough

(Second hand copy in very good condition) (Hardback)

The limestone hills of The Mendips was for centuries one of the principal lead-mining districts of England. The Romans were raising and smelting lead there within six years of their occupation of Britain, and the industry did not finally become extinct until well into the 20th century.

In course of time the deposits of galena (lead ore) began to be exhausted but the industry got a new lease of life when the Mendips became one of the chief sources of calamine, obtained from ores of zinc and formerly in great demand for mixing with copper to make brass.
