THE MAP THAT CHANGED THE WORLD

The tale of William Smith and the birth of a science

By Simon Winchester

Hardback (Second hand copy in excellent condition)

The extraordinary tale of William Smith, an Oxfordhire blacksmith's son, who single handedly, without financial or professional support, created the first geological map.  It was a document that transformed the way the world was understood and laid the groundwork for great fortunes to be made in coal, oil, iron and tin and numerous other minerals.

The book not only tells a fascinating scientific story but also a moving human tale as Smith was imprisoned for debt, had his work plagiarised, and was ignored by the emerging scientific establishment.  But finally, in a twist of fate, Smith returned to London in triumph, to be hailed as a genius.

Published by Viking in 2001.
