The Cheviot Hills consist of Devonian granite, which is surrounded by Silurian and Devonian andesitic lava flows, tuffs and agglomerates. These are intruded by a swarm of igneous dykes.
The surrounding lower ground is formed from Carboniferous Limestone, though much of it is obscured by deposits left behind by glaciers during the Ice Age.
