THE EARLY HISTORY OF PALAEONTOLOGY

(Second hand copy in very good condition) (58 page booklet)
Published by the British Museum (Natural History) in 1976

By W. N. Edwards

An authoritative introduction to the early history of the science of palaeontology, from the earliest times until the foundation of the British Museum (Natural History) and the collections of Sir Hans Sloane.

There are fascinating nuggets of information in the book. Such as the fact that ancient Egyptians used fossil logs for making corduroy roads over desert sands, and that in the Middle Ages the most widespread view of fossils was that which invoked a 'plastic force' in nature which was capable of producing fossils in the earth itself. This is despite the fact the some very early philosophers such as Pythagoras are reported to have accepted that fossil shells found on mountains were an indication that the mountains were once under the sea.

Soft cover. 58 pages. Very good condition. Published by the British Museum (Natural History). 1967 Black and white photographs and illustrations throughout.
