THE DINOSAUR HUNTERS:
A TRUE STORY OF SCIENTIFIC RIVALRY AND THE DISCOVERY OF THE PREHISTORIC WORLD

By Deborah Cadbury

Hardback with dust jacket
Second hand copy in very good condition

It is not widely known that dinosaurs are a British 'invention'. Bones of these giant, extinct creatures were first found in Britain and the word 'dinosaur' was first coined here. The fascinating story of how they were first found, investigated and named is told in this highly readable book.

Deborah Cadbury recreates the bitter feud between two men: Gideon Mantell, a shoemaker's son, who first uncovered giant bones in a Sussex quarry, and Richard Owen, an eminent anatomist, who gave the extinct creatures their name and scooped the credit for their discovery.

Their struggle created a new science that would change our perception of our place in the universe, and bring to light a prehistoric world that was stranger than we imagined.
