STROMATOLITE

Cut and polished

70 million years old
(Cretaceous period)

Potosi, Andes Mountains, Bolivia

This is a beautiful thick slice of a stromatolite preserved in rock. Polished on one side and presented in a lidded gift box.

Stromatolites are structures formed in shallow water by cyanobacteria (blue-green algae). They are among the oldest fossils, dating back 3.5 billion years.

Stromatolites use water, carbon dioxide and sunlight to create food and give out oxygen as a by-product and are thought to have been responsible for the oxygen in the Earth’s primaeval atmosphere.  Today stromatolite communities are rare.
