STRIPED FLINT

Cut and polished

Holy Cross Mountains, Poland

This unusual and highly attractive variety of flint is from Poland.  It is mined commercially near the town of Sandomierz.  
  
It occurs in chalky limestone dating from the Jurassic period and has been known about since prehistoric times.  It is used extensively for jewellery.

This example is a single flint nodule that has been cut through and polished to reveal the banding.
