Crystal ‘twinning’ occurs when two or more intergrown crystals share the same crystal lattice points and have grown in a symmetrical fashion. Staurolite crystals are often twinned and sometimes take the form of a cross. The name is derived from the Greek stauros for cross and lithos for stone.
