STALACTITIC GOETHITE

Hobbs Quarry, Longhope,
Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire

A nice example of the stalactitic form of the mineral goethite (iron hydroxide).

This specimen is from an old collection, collected in 1982. Hobbs Quarry is an old limestone quarry and no other goethite specimens are known from there.

The Forest of Dean was once of national importance in the production of iron for hundreds of years, using local coal and charcoal for smelting.
