Classic cut and polished slice
 
Portway Mine, Dirtlow Rake, near Castleton, Derbyshire
 
A large and very fine example of stalactitic barite from Dirtlow Rake, near Castleton. This highly attractive form of barite was discovered many years ago and has found its way into collections nationwide. A classic British mineral.
  
The central core is composed of radiating, bladed crystals of pale, greyish-blue barite and this is surrounded by banded tan and cream coloured barite. It has been polished on one side.
   
This specimen is from an old collection. It was collected, cut and polished in the late 1970s.
  
Presented in a lidded gift box with a​​​​​​ free metal stand.
