SPHALERITE CRYSTALS

Brownley Hill Mine, Nenthead, Cumbria

A small but beautiful specimen of lustrous, black crystals of sphalerite with ankerite on a matrix of hard limestone from this disused lead mine in the northern Pennines. 

Sphalerite is the chief ore of zinc. Sphalerite usually occurs with galena, the chief ore of lead.

This specimen was collected in the 1980s and is from an old collection. Presented in a lidded gift box.
