SPHALERITE CRYSTALS

Brownley Hill Mine, Nenthead, Cumbria

Lustrous, black crystals of sphalerite, richly scattered in cavities in hard limestone from this disused lead mine in the northern Pennines.

Sphalerite is the chief ore of zinc.  Sphalerite occurs with galena, the chief ore of lead.  
  
This specimen was collected in the 1980s.
