MINERALS OF SOUTH WEST ENGLAND
The metal mines of Cornwall and Devon have produced an astonishing variety of mineral species over a long period of time, but mostly during the heyday of mining in the 18th and 19th centuries when Cornwall supplied the World with copper and tin.
The valuable ores and their beautiful mineral specimens are the result of the intrusion of huge, hot masses of granite about 300 million years ago, which are now exposed at the surface from Dartmoor to Lands End. Evidence of this industry can be seen today in the form of the stone engine houses which contained the steam pumping engines essential for dewatering the deep mines.
