SNOWFLAKE OBSIDIAN
Large cut and polished display piece
Millard County, Utah, USA
A lovely piece of snowflake obsidian with a cut and polished face. It has a cut base so displays well without a stand.
Obsidian is a natural volcanic glass, formed when lava from a volcano cools extremely quickly leaving no time for crystals to grow. The white ‘snowflake’ patches are due to partial crystallization of the glass.
The lava that produces obsidian is usually sticky and highly viscous, resulting in explosively violent volcanic eruptions.
