SMALL FOSSIL GASTROPOD ON ORIGINAL MATRIX

40 million years old

Barton-on-Sea, Hampshire

An example of a fossil gastropod from Barton-on-Sea preserved in the clay in which it was found.

This shell of a marine mollusc resembles a modern shell but it is a genuine fossil.  It was found in the cliffs of Barton-on-Sea in Hampshire, in clays and sands called the Barton Beds that were laid down under the sea in the Upper Eocene period when the climate was warmer than today.

This fossil is from an old collection and was collected in 1975.  It is presented in the original 1970s plastic display box with a hinged lid.
