Silicon is the second most abundant element in the Earth’s crust after oxygen, but it does not occur on its own (in a free state). Instead it combines with oxygen to form silicon dioxide (silica).
Silicate minerals make up over 90% of the Earth’s crust. Silica is most familiar to us a quartz, flint and even common sand. The name silica derives from silex - Latin for flint.
Silicon has had a huge effect on the modern world economy from chemicals and construction to biology and, of course, modern electronics.
