SILICIFIED FOSSIL WOOD FROM ESSEX - Chelmsford, Essex
« backFOSSILISED WOOD FROM ESSEX
300 million years old
Roxwell Quarry, Chelmsford, Essex
A piece of fossilised wood, completely turned to quartz, from the gravels of central Essex that were laid down by the Thames during the Ice Age. One end has been cut flat but is unpolished.
It is thought to originate from near Coventry where there are rocks of late Carboniferous/early Permian age. The wood was brought to Essex by the Thames during the early Ice Age when it was a much larger river with headwaters in North Wales.
