SHAP GRANITE ERRATIC (CUT AND POLISHED) - Whitby, Yorkshire
« backCut and polished cobble providing evidence of ice movement across Britain, about 20,000 years ago
Sandsend, near Whitby, Yorkshire
Shap granite is an attractive and very distinctive coarse-grained granite from Shap in Cumbria. It has large pink crystals of orthoclase feldspar in a groundmass of plagioclase feldspar, black mica, and translucent quartz. The granite was originally magma that was intruded into the crust around 400 million years ago.
This is a gorgeous cut and polished cobble of Shap granite that has been carried across the Pennines during the Ice Age to what is now the Yorkshire coast by ice flowing eastwards over the Tyne Gap.
