STONE CARVING in SERPENTINITE

Zimbabwe, Africa (second hand)

An elegant carving of two faces in serpentinite rock from Zimbabwe. This style of African stone carving  is known as 'Shona sculpture' (after Zimbabwe's most numerous tribe).

Serpentinite is a rock composed of one or more serpentine group minerals, the name originating from the similarity of the texture of the rock to that of the skin of a snake. Minerals in this group, usually light to dark green, give the rock a slippery or greasy feel.

Several types of serpentinite are used for carving. The harder varieties are used for more durable and more expensive works of art. This piece is very soft, and there are a few minor scratches.

Presented in a lidded gift box.
