SEPTARIAN NODULE (VERY FINE CUT AND POLISHED SPECIMEN) - Germany
« backSEPTARIAN NODULE
Cut and polished
20 million years old
Miocene Limestones
Rüssingen, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany
A beautiful cut and polished half of a septarian nodule from Germany. It is an unusual pale colour with cracks lined with transparent calcite crystals. This is a lovely specimen that has been polished to a mirror finish.
Septarian nodules, or 'septaria', are remarkable natural objects. They are round concretions containing a network of internal cracks that have been filled with minerals, particularly calcite.
The cracks are called ‘septa’ from the Latin word septum or ‘partition’, which gives the nodules their name. Exactly how these nodules were formed is still not fully understood.
