SEPTARIA
Cut half containing crystals of strontianite
Pontault-Combault, Seine-et-Marne, France
A cut but unpolished section through a septarian nodule from France showing calcium-rich strontianite crystals in the fissures.
Septarian nodules, or 'septaria', are remarkable natural objects. They are round concretions containing a network of internal cracks that have been filled with minerals, usually calcite. Exactly how these nodules were formed is still not fully understood.
