SELENITE CRYSTAL (LARGE CRYSTAL WITH CLEAVED SURFACE) - Isle of Sheppey, Kent
« backLARGE, NATURAL SELENITE CRYSTAL
with cleaved surface
Isle of Sheppey, Kent
Selenite is a transparent variety of gypsum, named after the Greek for 'stone of the moon'.
This specimen was collected from the London Clay in the cliffs on the north coast of the Isle of Sheppey. The crystals naturally grow in clay as a result of a chemical reaction between the calcium of fossil shells and the sulphur from iron pyrite (fools gold).
This crystal has a lovely cleaved surface. It also displays colourful Newton rings in the internal cleavage planes.
Presented in a lidded gift box.
