FOSSIL SEA URCHIN (ECHINOID)

80 million years old
(Cretaceous period)

Margate, Kent

This lovely, heart-shaped Micraster is complete and uncrushed. It is well-preserved with fine detail of the surface of the original shell, although it is very slightly water-worn in places

Sea urchins, or echinoids, are marine creatures with shells covered in spines, which became detached when the animal died. Fossils of the sea urchin Micraster can be found in the Chalk of southern England.

This fossil is from an old collection and was collected in the 1980s.  A delightful little fossil!

Please note that some photographs are taken using oblique lighting to make the surface details easier to see.
