SEA URCHIN (ECHINOID) FROM THE CHALK - 80 million years old - Dover, Kent

FOSSIL SEA URCHIN (ECHINOID)

80 million years old
(Cretaceous period)

Dover, Kent

This heart-shaped Micraster is complete and well-preserved, but the top surface is somewhat water-worn and part of the shell is missing. But it is still a lovely little fossil.

Sea urchins, or echinoids, are marine creatures with shells covered in spines, which became detached when the animal died. Fossils of the sea urchin Micraster can be found in the Chalk of southern England.

This fossil is from an old collection and was collected in the 1980s.

Please note that some photographs are taken using oblique lighting to make the surface details easier to see.
