SCOTTISH AGATE - Tayside, Scotland
« backAGATE
Cut and polished natural agate
Ardownie Quarry, Monifieth, near Dundee, Tayside, Scotland
A very nice polished Scottish agate from a classic locality.
The agates from the east coast of Scotland are World-renowned and have been popular with collectors since they were first made famous by Matthew Heddle (1828-1897), Scotland's greatest collector and cataloguer of minerals.
They occur in cavities in andesite lava which was erupted from violent volcanic eruptions in the early Devonian period, about 410 million years ago. This is one of many agates collected from this working quarry in the early 1990s, and saved from the crusher, but this particular layer has now been worked out.
Some of the andesite lava is still attached which adds interest and provides context. It has some cracks, formed thousands of years ago, but this is common for Scottish agates.
