A beautiful, fibrous variety of gypsum
Newark, Nottinghamshire
Approximately 220 million years ago, during the time of the first dinosaurs, England was a hot, featureless land with many large saline lakes. During dry seasons these lakes evaporated leaving behind thick deposits of rock salt and gypsum.
This is a good example of satin spar from the British Gypsum mines.
