SAMPLE OF CRUDE OIL FROM BRITAIN'S FIRST OIL WELL

Hardstoft, Tibshelf, Derbyshire

Following a decision in 1911 to power the Royal Navy's ships with oil and phase out the use of coal, a search began for an indigenous oil supply to reduce dependence on imported oil. Exploratory wells were drilled in Derbyshire, Staffordshire and Scotland but it was at Hardstoft in the parish of Tibshelf, in Derbyshire where oil was first struck on the 27th May 1919.

Hardstoft No. 1 well was the first successful oil well drilled in the U.K.  It struck oil in a sandy limestone of Lower Carboniferous age at a depth of 3,070 feet.  An 85 foot high derrick, and other infrastructure was installed and the well produced 29,000 barrels of oil between 1920 and 1946.

The well was finally capped and all infrastructure demolished in 1952.  Oil still seeps from the ground on the original site which is now occupied by ‘The Old Oil Well Gardening Centre’. The owner of the garden centre is proud to be the custodian of such an important piece of Britain’s industrial heritage.

This oil has been kindly supplied by the Old Oil Well Gardening Centre. It is provided in a glass phial with screw top and presented in a lidded gift box. Please keep the container sealed. For further information on the Hardstoft No.1 Well please click here.
