RUBY CRYSTALS

Khit Ostrov, Republic of Karelia, Russia

Ruby and sapphire are both varieties of the mineral corundum.  Corundum forms in metamorphic rocks such as schist.

These small specimens consist of a pink ruby crystal in almandine-biotite-plagioclase schist.  The rubies display a red fluorescence in UV light.
