ROUGE GRIOTTE

A beautiful and distinctive French marble. The quarries that were the source of this stone were worked from the 17th century onwards, supplying churches and grand buildings. It was particularly favoured by King Louis XIV of France who used it extensively in the Palace of Versailles.

It is a late Devonian or early Carboniferous nodular limestone with occasional white calcite veins. The red colour is due to the iron mineral hematite.
