ROSEWOOD MARBLE - Derbyshire
« backROSEWOOD MARBLE
Cut and polished
300 million years old
Nettler Dale, near Ashford, Derbyshire
Rosewood marble is one of the classic Derbyshire marbles. Resembling wood grain, it is not a true marble in the geological sense, but a rich brown, banded algal limestone that takes a beautiful polish.
It was used extensively in Derbyshire marble inlay workshops during the 19th and early 20th centuries.
This piece has one cut and polished face. A lovely example of the stone.
