From the Rochechouart Impact Structure, near Limoges, France
About 200 million years old
The Rochechouart impact structure in south-central France was created by the impact of an asteroid about 200 million years ago, during the Late Triassic period.
The structure is named after the town of Rochechouart, which is built with rocks created or modified by the impact. The initial crater shape and structure has been lost by erosion.
The impact origin of the structure was first suggested in 1969 due to the occurrence of unusual set of rock types referred to as breccias and confirmed in the mid 1970s.
