RIEDÖSCHINGER TRAVERTINE

Riedöschingen, Blumberg, Germany

An attractive pink travertine has been quarried near Riedöschingen in south-west Germany. This piece has been cut into two halves to reveal the pink colouration.

Travertine is deposited by mineral springs, especially hot springs, and is formed by precipitation of calcium carbonate. It is commonly used as a building stone.

This example is from an old university collection.
