FLOW BANDED RHYOLITE LAVA

680 million years old

The Wrekin, Shropshire

The Wrekin is a prominent and well known landmark in Shropshire, the summit of which is composed of volcanic rocks of late Precambrian age.

This specimen, collected from the summit, is an example of the highly explosive lava known as rhyolite. It was laid down by violent volcanic eruptions when this area was a volcanic island arc, similar to present day Japan.

This is a very good example of rhyolite, showing the flow banding well.  It is from an old collection.
