RHYNIE CHERT - 410 million years old - Scotland
« back410 million years old
Rhynie, Aberdeenshire, Scotland
Rhynie Chert is a famous sedimentary rock found near the village of Rhynie in the Highlands of Scotland. It is a siliceous sinter, formed near hot springs and geysers.
What makes Rhynie Chert unique is that it has preserved the remains of some of the earliest plants and animals to colonise the land, including insects. These fossils are studied by taking thin sections of the rock and viewing them under magnification.
The locality is inaccessible as there are no current exposures. It is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). Pieces of the chert have, however, been picked up in local fields.
This is a very good sample from an old collection.
