REPLICA OF THE BERLIN SPECIMEN
OF ARCHAEOPTERYX

In polyurethane foam
(second hand)

Archaeopteryx is the earliest known fossil bird and one of the most famous and most valuable fossils in the world. Only six specimens are known, all of them from rocks of Upper Jurassic age known as the Solnhofen Limestone from Solnhofen and Eichstatt in Bavaria, Germany. This specimen, discovered in about 1874, is the most complete and is housed in the Natural History Museum, Berlin.

The quarries where these fossils were found were originally worked for lithographic limestone printing plates. They are still worked today for decorative and building stone.

This replica was produced by Stuart Baldwin's company Educational Palaeontological Reproductions in the 1990s. His catalogue dating from that time describes this specimen as a complete skeleton showing both wings with feathers, humerus, radius, ulna and digits complete with claws; skull, cervical, dorsal and caudal vertebrae, tail feathers; ribs with gastralia; ischium, ilium, pubis and both complete legs.

This replica doesn't have a lot of detail but is a useful teaching aid. It is made of polyurethane foam and so is very lightweight and has been provided with a facility for it to be hung on a wall. It is in reasonable condition and has a label on the back.
